Hair Care Tips for Winter

Written by in Hair Care Tips on .

Winter is a stressful time not only for our skin but for hair as well.  Gusting winds, hats, and freezing air outside or over-dried air inside make our hair look lifeless and unmanageable. Cold winter months therefore require a special effort to look after ones hair. There are several tips and tricks that can help to make hair look shiny, healthy and full of life, even in the coldest times of the year. Additionally there are some great natural hair care products available on the market.

Washing and Styling
First of all, it is very important to minimise the damage that is done to hair. Try to dry your hair naturally as far as possible.  If you have to use a hair dryer, go for a low temperature regime and hold the hair dryer at least 10 inches away from your hair. Don’t forget to use a heat protection product beforehand.  At CosNatural we love Giovanni Vitapro Protective Moisture Leave-In Hair Treatment.
When washing your hair, only use shampoo to clean the scalp.  Using it on the full hair length can over dry the ends. The opposite works for conditioner. Apply conditioner from the mid hair length to the ends. This will not cause extra build up of oil on the roots but at the same time it will prevent the ends from becoming brittle and sensitised.  Also try to use only small amounts of shampoo and occasionally give your hair a break from washing to allow the production of natural oils.

Hair Care Products
It is a good idea to choose shampoo suitable for hair roots and conditioner for hair ends.  In winter time it could be useful to go for body-building shampoo. This keeps the hair volume when you take off your hat. For this CosNatural recommends Alba Botanica Body Builder Mango Shampoo and Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Shampoo
To give extra protection for the hair ends, use extra nourishing and restorative conditioner such as Briogeo Rosarco Reparative Conditioner or Green People Intensive Repair Conditioner.  To give a little bit of extra care you can use A’kin Ginkgo and Jojoba Intensive Hair Masque or Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask. Different oils can also work very well to give additional nourishment.  Apply some argan, coconut, jojoba or even olive oil throughout the whole hair length 30-40 minutes before washing your hair for more smooth and shiny hair. By the way, jojoba oil is believed to promote hair growth as well.

Nutrition plays a crucial role in keeping your hair and skin healthy and beautiful. This is especially true in winter when your body can often be deprived of many essential elements. Make sure you eat plenty of vegetables and fruits especially greenery to get enough zinc and selenium. Sufficient consumption of healthy fatty acids can also benefit your hair greatly. Include nuts, fish and flaxseeds in your diet as they are a great source of Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids in addition to many other vitamins and minerals.
